Reading Slump

I read. A lot. By a lot, I mean hundreds of books per year. I finished 2019 with over 250 books. So suffice it to say that I love to read.

I read so much that I don’t really watch television or movies. I was at Walmart the other day passing the electronics section. You know the section, it’s on the way to books and it invariably has a salesman there for some cable company. So I pass him and he asks “who do you have for tv and internet?” I quickly told him that I don’t watch tv. So of course he asks, “what do you do then?” I know he’s hoping to hook me on internet service. Indignantly I tell him that I read. Slack jawed he says “that’s a first.” I then excused myself and walked to the book aisle. I loved telling him in so few words that I don’t need his cable.

While I was in the book aisle, mentally making lists of the next books to buy, I thought about my reading lately. It has been about a week since I have finished a book. For you casual readers you are probably thinking “wow! A book a week, that’s awesome.” What I thought was “what is wrong with me?” I finish books daily. At the most, every third day I finish a book. It’s been a long time since it’s been a week.

After some reflecting, I realized that I’ve changed my lifestyle lately. A good friend got me a gym membership and I’ve been going daily. I made a goal to walk 2020 miles this year. At the time of this writing, I’m 3 miles behind schedule. Our dishwasher broke and I’m doing them by hand. (Makes me appreciate my grandmother a heck of a lot more since she never used one. Washing dishes takes time people!). I do listen to books (usually on double time) but I can’t get all the books I want on audio and audio still takes longer than my reading.

So how do I get rid of my slump? I have conversations daily about books. I do read daily but I find my mind wandering. So I stop. I’ve got four great books going now but I can’t find my motivation. Give me some of yours! What do you do when your in a slump?

BTW, here are the books I’m currently reading:

The Toll, third book in the Scythe series by Neil Shusterman

Insatiable, twelfth book in the Steel Brothers Saga by Helen Hardt

Where Dreams Descend, book one in the Kingdom of Cards series by Janella Angeles

Opal, book three in the Lux series by Jennifer R. Armentrout
