Setting a Reading Goal for the Year

I’ve been back and forth between reading goals. I always want to be ambitious but I also have to be practical. When setting your reading goal for the year, I suggest you consider the following:

  1. How much time you have to read each day/week. If you have a lot of down time and can commit it to reading, set your goal high. If not, set it at a more reasonable number.
  2. How many books you read last year. If you know how many books you’ve read in the past year, it is easy to adjust from there. (Have you tried using Goodreads yearly goal to keep track of how much you’ve read?)
  3. What is your desire for reading? Do you want to read more? Do you want to read more intense books? Are you looking for easier/fluffier stuff? Depending on your desire, you may need to adjust the book count. If your books are heavier, reduce the number. Likewise, if they are fluffy, increase the number.

Once you’ve set a goal, don’t be afraid to adjust it if necessary. This past year, I over set my goal. I had gotten a second job that took up most of my reading time and I was going to fall way short. So I reset it to 100 less books and was able to make it. (My overall goal for last year was 125 books, originally set at 225.)

Here are some useful tools to help you.

Whatever you choose to use, best of luck to you in the coming year for your reading goals.
